The Negroni: Italy's Most Iconic Cocktail

Some cocktails are so well-loved that they've earned a day in the calendar all to themselves. The Negroni took it a notch higher: it got a whole week. That's how adored this Italian cocktail is.

What is Negroni Week?

Negroni Week is a worldwide celebration of one of the world's most iconic cocktails, when bars and restaurants across the globe raise a glass (or several) to the Negroni. This year, it runs from 21 to 27 September 2026, and it's the perfect excuse to seek out a great one, or master your own at home. So here's your little dive into the Negroni: what it is, where it came from, how to make a perfect one, and where to drink a truly special one here in Dubai.

What is a Negroni?

The Negroni is a classic Italian cocktail made of just three ingredients: Campari, sweet red vermouth, and gin, served over ice with an orange garnish. You may have noticed I just listed two spirit categories and one brand in particular. This part is crucial: you can choose your favourite brands of sweet vermouth and gin, but not your Italian bitter.

What is a Negroni?

To put it simply, THERE IS NO NEGRONI WITHOUT CAMPARI. Always remember that.

Campari is the soul of the drink, and no other Italian bitter can replace it. Its vibrant red is what gives the Negroni its signature colour, its bittersweet backbone, its character. It's a non-negotiable.

Sweet red vermouth is Campari's counterweight, softening its bitterness and adding a herbal depth to the drink.

Gin: the backbone, bringing botanical complexity and a clean, juniper-led kick that ties everything together.

That's it. Three ingredients, in perfect balance.

The History of the Negroni

The Negroni was born in Florence, Italy. The year was 1919. Count Camillo Negroni sat down in Caffè Casoni and asked his favourite bartender for a twist on his usual. Fosco Scarselli obliged, replaced the soda water in his Americano with gin, and added an orange garnish instead of the usual lemon to mark the new drink apart.

The History of the Negroni

Instant success. The word spread, and soon a returning crowd would come in ordering 'what the Count usually has'. That was enough to name the cocktail after him. Over a century later, it's still one of the most iconic cocktails on earth. Not bad for a simple request to make a drink a little stronger.

What does a Negroni taste like? Is it sweet or bitter?

The Negroni is definitely not a sweet cocktail, even though its ruby-red colour might suggest a syrupy drink. The first sip hits with Campari's bittersweet intensity, followed by the vermouth's herbal sweetness and the gin's botanical lift. It's complex. Not an easy-drinking cocktail, but a balanced one.

If you're new to it, give it a few sips. The Negroni is famous for winning people over. It might just be the most rewarding "acquired taste" in the cocktail world.

What is the ratio for a Negroni?

The easiest you could have wished for: 1:1:1. Equal parts Campari, sweet vermouth, and gin. That perfect equilibrium is the whole point: they all work in harmony. It's one of the easiest classic cocktail ratios in the world to memorise, which is probably part of why the Negroni has endured for over a hundred years.

How strong is a Negroni?

It's not a shy drink. Because all three ingredients are alcoholic, there's no juice, soda, or mixer to soften the blow. A Negroni typically lands somewhere in the mid-20s for ABV, depending on the gin and vermouth you use. In other words: strong, and best sipped slowly. That's rather the point. It's a drink to savour over good conversation, not to rush. Pace yourself, and enjoy every sip.

How do you make a Negroni?

Making a Negroni at home is incredibly simple, and with our Negroni Week promo, there's never been a better time to get started. Here's the classic Negroni recipe.

How do you make a Negroni?

30ml Campari

30ml sweet red vermouth

30ml gin

Orange slice or peel, to garnish

How do you serve a Negroni?

Tradition and good taste say a Negroni is served in a rocks glass, over a large cube or plenty of ice. The classic garnish is orange, either a slice or a twist of peel expressed over the top to release its fragrant oils. That hit of citrus against the bitter Campari is a huge part of the magic. And remember: a Negroni is always stirred, never shaken. Stirring chills and blends it while keeping it silky and clear.

Negroni twists worth trying

Once you've mastered the classic, the Negroni is a wonderful base to play with, as long as Campari stays in the glass. Two of the best:

Negroni Sbagliato

"Sbagliato" means "mistaken" in Italian, and the story goes that it was born when a bartender accidentally reached for sparkling wine instead of gin. However unlikely this story sounds, we do not question it and prefer to call it a happy accident. Simply replace the gin with Prosecco for a lighter and fizzier take.

30ml sweet red vermouth

30ml Prosecco

Orange slice, to garnish

Oaxaca Negroni

A Mexican-inspired twist. Here, the gin is swapped for mezcal (named after Oaxaca, mezcal's spiritual home), while the Campari and vermouth stay exactly where they belong. The result is a Negroni with a gorgeous smoky depth.
