Every 22nd of Feb, the universe delivers exactly what we need: World Margarita Day (the cocktail, habibi, not the pizza, although both deserve a holiday in my opinion). Whether you're a purist who would never dream of messing with the classics, or the kind of person who thinks "what if we gave it a little kick?" (the correct answer is yes, always), I’ve got your back. Now pull out your shaker, squeeze those limes, and let's get into some favourite margarita cocktail recipes!
But first, let's take a moment to appreciate just how this glorious cocktail came to earn its own holiday.
Once upon a Margarita
Legend has it that the Margarita cocktail is almost as mysterious as it is delicious. Yes, habibi, nobody can quite agree. What everyone DOES agree on is that it was born in Mexico, somewhere between the 1930s and 1940s, and that the world is a considerably better place because of it.
One of the most enduring origin stories involves a restaurateur named Carlos "Danny" Herrera, who reportedly concocted the drink at his Tijuana restaurant in 1938. The story goes that he created it for a customer who was allergic to all spirits except tequila (!) He combined salt, lime, and tequila, which were already the traditional companions of a tequila shot, and turned them into something far more iconic.
Another popular theory traces the drink back to the classic "Daisy" cocktail, a template of spirit, citrus, and liqueur that was popular during Prohibition. When Americans crossed the border into Mexico to enjoy spirits they couldn't get at home, bartenders began swapping brandy for tequila in their Daisies. And since Daisy translates to Margarita in Spanish… well, here’s your linguistic clue hiding in plain sight.
A third legend credits socialite Margarita Sames, who allegedly mixed the drink for guests at her Acapulco villa in 1948. One of those guests was reportedly a bartender who took the recipe home and helped spread it across the country. Whether it's true or not, it's always an excellent dinner party story.
So, Why Do We Celebrate It?
National Margarita Day was founded by Todd McCalla, a man of excellent taste who looked at the margarita and thought: This drink deserves its own holiday. Honestly, Todd? You deserve more than a toast. A salt-rimmed statue, maybe.
The day has since grown into a worldwide event, with bars and restaurants everywhere raising a glass to the cocktail that started with a sneeze, a daisy, a socialite, and a lot of tequila.

Obviously, I hear the word cocktail and go running to Travis, MMI’s Master Mixologist and probably one of the most reliable experts out there. It didn’t take too much bribing; he spilled the tequila and entrusted me with the best margarita recipes. Keep reading, habibi, here are two knockout margarita recipes: the Classic Margarita for the purists, and a Spicy Margarita for those who like their cocktails with a little attitude.
Both are Travis-approved. Both are incredibly good, and both will make you rise to the status of mixology god (almost).
Let's start where all great things begin: the original. A classic Margarita recipe is one of the most deceptively simple drinks in the world. Three ingredients. Infinite ways to get it wrong. Here's how to get it very, very right.

What You'll Need
- 2 shots Cascahuín Blanco Tequila
- 1 shot Alma Finca Orange Liqueur
- 1 shot freshly squeezed lime juice
- Garnish: a lime wedge and Maldon salt
The golden ratio is everything.
2:1:1. Two parts tequila, one part orange liqueur, one part lime juice. Tattoo it on your brain (or, you know, just bookmark this page).
Put the sugar syrup down.
A margarita is a sour, and the orange liqueur brings all the sweetness you need. Adding simple syrup to your margarita is the cocktail equivalent of putting ketchup on a pizza. No way, José!
Salt with a smile, not a halo.
Rim only half the glass with salt. Why? Because not everyone is a salt lover, and forcing someone to drink through a salt crust they didn't sign up for is a crime against hospitality. A salt smile gives people the choice.
Serve it short.
Glassware matters, habibi! A classic margarita belongs in a short, heavy-based tumbler. Not a stemmed glass. Not a plastic cup. Not a bowl the size of your head (as tempting as that may be). Short, grounded, classic. Like a great tequila itself.
Now for the twist: the spicy margarita recipe has earned its place in the cocktail hall of fame, and once you try this version, you'll understand why. This is not your average margarita cocktail recipe. This one bites back, in the best possible way.

What You'll Need
- 1 shot Espolòn Reposado Tequila
- 1 dry chilli
- 1/2 shot freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/3 shot agave nectar
- Garnish: lime wedge and a Tajín spice smile
Go for the Reposado.
This is not an accident. A Reposado tequila, with its gentle oak influence and warm, rounded character, plays beautifully with the heat of chilli. If you reached for a Blanco here, those pronounced green capsicum and peppery notes would clash with the chilli flavours and throw the whole drink off balance. Save the Blanco for the classic.
Agave nectar: your call.
You can play with the ratios if you like your drinks on the sweeter side. The touch of agave nectar will round out the flavours and make everything pop a little more. If you're a purist (even in your spicy era), skip it. The drink is brilliant either way.
The margarita is one of the world's most beloved cocktails, and it's beloved because when it's made well, it's genuinely one of the most satisfying things you can put in a glass. Fresh lime juice, not the bottled stuff. Good tequila, because the spirit is the backbone of everything. And a little respect for the craft (simple rules, yet enormous payoff.)
Whether you're going classic or spicy, the most important thing is that you're celebrating. World Margarita Day only comes once a year, and it would be rude not to participate with these simple Margarita recipes!
Now, habibi, those limes aren’t going to squeeze themselves. Head to the MMI Cheers Club App, get that tequila delivered faster than you can salt a rim, and make this World Margarita Day one for the books.
Cheers, and sip responsibly!
